Born to Shine

“Out of the Shadows – Women Leaders Arise” conference in Gulu, highlighted the need for Training and Mentorship. ‘Born to ShineWomen and Youth Survivor Leaders Training and Empowerment’ was designed in response, to equip these community-based leaders with the knowledge and skills to address the issues that are most important to them and to create sustainable change in their communities. The project had 4 stages: 1) Finding and mobilizing; 2) Developing the content; 3) Training and mentorship; 4) Remote Support.

We were based at Gulu, since it is the main city in the North and a vibrant hub of NPO activity, but we also wanted to include within our project scope: Lira, Soroti and neighboring districts, as well as Kitgum, Lamwo, Pader and neighboring towns and villages, which required traveling to those places and meeting with potential partners, looking for Women and Youth leaders with at least three of the following criteria:

  • survivors of conflict, abduction or displacement
  • currently working in a leadership or admin role
  • showing clear signs of leadership potential
  • currently active in community development
  • currently active in peace, justice and/or advocacy
  • most likely to implement the lessons learnt
